Rob was a promising young footballer who was on the books of three top teams. Yet the Southampton supporter decided to favour athletics and quickly claimed English Schools titles as a junior.

He has a degree in management sciences and accounting from University of Southampton. Just a month after finishing the course in 2005 he ran his PB of 45.01 for 400m in Geneva .

In 2009 after getting back to near his best form, he ran 45.15 in Switzerland in June and after winning the World Trials in Birmingham he went to the World Championships where he finished in 7th place in his semi-final. 2010 was a slightly disappointing season over one lap but he was an ever-present member of the 4x400m squad and secured medals for England in the Commonwealth Games and also GB in the European Championships.

He uses the same safety pins for each race. Robert’s older sister Helena was a good standard middle distance runner and his mother (Jacqueline Chidlow) was an English Schools medallist.
