Phillips Olaosebikan Idowu is a member of Belgrave Harriers and is known as much for his eccentricity as his triple jumping! His hair has been virtually every colour of the rainbow and his facial piercings are his trademarks. He was a talented sportsman at school in both basketball and American football.

At the age of 21, Phillips Idowu showed that he had the ability to keep Great Britain in the top echelons at this event. As Jonathan Edwards was reaching the twilight of his illustrious career, the tempestuous Brit had a very erratic record and it has only been in recent seasons that Idowu has been more reliable at major championships.

In 2000, the Hackney-born athlete set a lifetime best to qualify for the Olympic final with 17.12m, and was only four centimetres short of that mark in the final, as he finished a promising sixth in Sydney and made the world final the following year.

At the Commonwealth Games in Manchester, Idowu enjoyed a tremendous battle with Edwards in the final. The 29-year-old took the lead, setting his existing outdoor lifetime best of 17.68m, only to be denied by his veteran team-mate, who responded with a an effort of 17.86m, which destroyed Idowu’s chances of claiming his first major title.

At the 2002 European Championships, Idowu had a second chance of claiming a gold medal and qualification looked promising, as he led the preliminaries with a leap of 17.54m but disappointingly, the Londoner was slightly out of sorts in the final, finishing fifth.

After missing the 2003 season, things looked promising for the 2004 campaign. After the retirement of Edwards, Idowu was handed the mantle of British No.1 and courtesy of a 17.47m jvictory at the London Grand Prix, it looked as though Idowu would have been in medal contention for the Athens Olympic Games, but after jumping 17.33m in qualification, into a strong headwind, he crashed out, recording three no-jumps in the final.

Idowu finally began to fulfil his potential in the 2006 campaign, winning the Commonwealth Games in Melbourne with a leap of 17.45m but at the European Championships in Gothenburg he was a disappointing fifth in the final.

Idowu started the 2007 season superlatively. At the European Indoor Championships in Birmingham, he had a great battle with his team-mate and rival Nathan Douglas and in a high quality competition, Idowu came out on top with a world-leading 17.56m and carrying that momentum into the summer, Idowu won the Bislett Games in Oslo before an untimely back injury wrecked his gold medal chances at the World Championships, where he finished sixth.

But 2008 was by far his best, as well as his most consistent campaign. Idowu made no secret of the fact he was in very good shape prior to the World Indoor Championships, where he destroyed the field with a second round effort of 17.75m, which improved Edwards’ national indoor record, to move to fifth on the
