The pinnacle of Jason Gardener’s career was his gold medal in the 4x100m relay at the 2004 Olympic Games. The Bath Bullet ran a tremendous first leg in that triumphant squad and gained a reputation of being a fantastic starter, which can be represented by his formidable indoor record. Gardener won the European indoor title on four successive occasions, even though Gardener was somewhat distracted in his final triumph in 2007 because of the impending birth of his child. Gardener also won bronze in Birmingham at the World Indoor Championships in 2003, and won the gold medal in Budapest in the following year but he did not defend his title in 2006 in Moscow, as he wanted to focus on the Commonwealth Games, but a back injury meant he crashed out in the quarter-finals, missed the relay and most of the outdoor season.
After suffering more injury troubles in the outdoor season in 2007, Gardener was only fourth at the Norwich Union World Trials, and decided to bow out from competition in front of a capacity crowd in Crystal Palace. |
