PETER ELLIOTT was a world class middle distance athlete from Yorkshire who established himself while still working full-time as a joiner for British Steel. As a youngster he won the exalted English Schools title four times, twice at 800m and twice at cross country and also held UK U17 record for 800m with a time of 1:50.7.

He won a bronze medal in the 1986 Commonwealth Games in Edinburgh and a silver medal in the 1987 World Championships in Rome over 800m. The following year he won silver again in the 1988 Olympic Games in Seoul over 1500m and in 1990 he took the gold medal in the Commonwealth Games 1500m in Auckland. In the summer of 1990 he ran an outstanding 1:42.97 in Seville to head the world rankings for that year.

Some say he was competing at the wrong time, as he had to contend with Coe, Cram and Ovett, but these athletes only spurred him on to greater things. He was part of the team that broke the rarely run 4x800m relay world record in 1982 and set a world indoor 1500m record of 3:34.20 in 1990 as a British indoor mile record of 3:52.02.

After retiring from running he became a coach and race organiser and has been Director of Running for the sports marketing agency Nova International and also Athlete Services Manager for Yorkshire at the EIS in Sheffield. He advised John Mayock to European Indoor 3000m gold in 1998.
