Emily Freeman qualified for the British team at the 2002 Commonwealth Games and the following season, made her international debut in Glasgow, running in the 4x100m and ever since, the Wakefield Harrier has been a stalwart on the British relay team, making the World Championships squad in 2005 and helped Britain to the silver medal at the 2006 European Championships.

In 2007, Freeman made her individual debut at the World Championships but controversially, the Huddersfield-born athlete was disqualified in the heats of the 200m, having been credited with a second false start, but redemption came in the 4x100m, where the British foursome finished a creditable fourth.

Freeman was vindicated in her decision to become a full-time athlete, and in June, she lowered her lifetime best from 23.27, to 23.01 and then 22.72 and was a model of consistency for the rest of the season, beating Christine Ohuruogu at the Olympic 200m Trials and making the Olympic Games semi-final, running under 23-seconds in all three rounds.

If 2008 was a good year, then 2009 was a great one with sub-23 seconds now the norm and in the World Championships in Berlin after a pb 22.64 in the semi-final she finished in a creditable seventh place in the final against the world's best. Earlier in the season she had run a pb for 100m 11.33 and won the 200m at the European Team Championhips in Portugal.
