Richard started running at the age of 9 in 1982, joining Aberdare Valley AAC and has competed every single year since. At the age of 13 he gained his first International Welsh School Honours. He Joined Swansea Harriers at the age of 16, where he competed for the Welsh Youth team. At the age of 19 he moved to Cardiff where he enjoyed 19 years competing in distances from 1,500 - marathon, received Junior, under 23 and full Senior International honours. Highlights at Cardiff included English AAA 6 Stage title and 12 stage bronze, 2 x Bronze medals in British Marathon Championships including 13th place in the 2007 Flora London Marathon. He re-joined Aberdare in 2010 at the age of 37. As a senior athlete he has won numerous races including every Welsh Distance running title. He has jointly won more Welsh Marathon Golds than any other runner and has represented GB in Marathon and Half Marathon. In 2011 he won the Commonwealth Ultra Distance Title.
