Michael transferred his allegiance from the USA to Great Britain in April 2008 through his British father living in London. Born in North Carolina and coached by Courtney Lester he had finished third as junior in the Pan American Ganes in the decathlon. He did not make the individual 400m for Beijing but helped Great Britain to finish fourth in the 4x400m and was second at the Gateshead Grand Prix, one week after the Olympic Games.

He had established himself in 2009 as Britain's top 400 metre runner before the World Championships in Berlin and in the semi-final he finally broke through the 45 second barrier with a 44.74 clocking to confirm his ranking. In the final he finished in seventh place. After Berlin he finished in third place at the Brussels Grand Prix and fourth in the World Athletics Final in Thessalonika. 2010 saw him go into the European Championships in Barcelona as Britain's number two behind Martyn Rooney and emerge as the outright number one with his silver medal performance - just failing to clinch the gold on the line.
