Just before turning 21 Matt watched his brother Graham compete in the 2003 Lanzarote Iron Man and this was motivation enough to get him involved in triathlon. This involvement lasted just over two years during which time he represented Great Britain at age group level in both triathlon and duathlon.
His running career started aged 23 in 2005 at Sale Harriers Manchester and he became part of the Wythenshawe training group, overseen by Dr Norman Poole. Here he made steady progress and this continued when he left to live in Budapest, Hungary during 2007 and 2008, where he taught English as a foreign language.
Upon returning to the UK, he established Elaces, a company specializing in triathlon accessories and apparel. In 2010 he made his international debut by representing England in the Lillebaelt Half Marathon, Denmark, a race he went on to win. Towards the end of that year he left for Alamosa, Colorado (7554ft) to compete as part of Adams State College's cross country and track and field teams. Despite a difficult first year, he completed his two year spell there in 2012 with five All-American honors and improved his 5000m and 10000m times by over half a minute and a minute respectively.
Now back in the UK, Matt is looking to convert the improvements he has made on the track to the road when he competes in The London Marathon in April.
