Greg Rutherford made a sudden breakthrough in 2005, winning the AAA Championships at the tender age of 18, before winning the European Junior Championships in a national junior record of 8.14m and the following season, he threatened the national record, as the youngster defended his AAA title, jumping 8.26m at the age of 19, before winning a European silver medal in Gothenburg.
Rutherford looked destined to snatch the British record from Chris Tomlinson in 2007, but injury thwarted any chance of making a breakthrough on to the international stage, having missed the vast majority of the outdoor campaign, and was short of fitness at the World Championships in Osaka.
The Milton Keynes athlete returned to good form in 2008 and after winning the Olympic Trials with a leap of 8.20m, he was the third best qualifier at the Olympic Games, but disappointingly, made no impression in the final finishing in 10th place.
At the 2009 World Championships in Berlin he sailed out to a new UK Record of 8.30m and in the final he finished a creditable fifth. At the Great North City Games in Newcastle he again hit top form with an 8.17m performance, the same as he jumped in the World Championship final. 2010 saw his early season blighted by injury but he bounced back at the Commonwealth Games with a fine silver medal after an encouraging 10.26 victory over 100m at the Bupa Great North City Games in Gateshead. However, in 2012 his world would change forever with an Olympic gold medal in front of a partisan 80,000 spectators in London and at last his true potential was unleashed.
Before focusing on athletics, Rutherford was a very talented footballer and trialled with Aston Villa. His Great Grandfather was an English international between 1904-08. |
