Germaine Mason transferred allegiances from Jamaica to Great Britain and he was eligible to compete in a British vest from 2006.
He was a prolific junior athlete, having won a silver and a bronze medal at the World Junior Championships in 2000 and 2002 respectively. Mason set a Jamaican record of 2.34m in 2003 at the Pan-American Games, winning the gold medal and his first at senior level. He also finished fifth in the World Championships in the same.

He collected a bronze medal at the IAAF World Indoor championships in Budapest in 2004.

Mason won his first British vest at the 2006 European Cup, where the former-Jamaican was third in Malaga and despite a confidence boosting 2.31m performance prior to the European Championships in Gothenburg, Mason crashed out in qualification. He is eligible to compete for Great Britain because his father was born in London.

In 2007, the Brit could not find any sort of consistency and once again, Mason was under-par at the World Championships, failing to make the World Championships final, but for all his disappointing performances in the past, Mason made amends with a tremendous 2008 campaign.

Despite not being touted as a true medal contender prior to the Beijing Olympics, he looked in fine shape as he led qualification and it was clear that the 25-year-old was psyched up for the final, as he guaranteed himself a medal with a first time clearance at 2.34m, which equalled his lifetime best from 2003. Mason failed to clear the corresponding height of 2.36m but won the silver medal, due to a first time clearance at 2.32m. 2009 was a low-key year due to injury but he still managed a fine 2.31m clearance at the Crystal Palace Grand Prix. 2010 saw him injured and he will be looking to make amends in 2011 at the World Championships and in 2012 at the London Olympics.

He is coached in Texas by Sue Humphrey who also coached Charles Austin to an Olympic gold in 1996. He is a second cousin to fellow British athlete, Simeon Williamson.
