Background as an athlete, poor javelin thrower, almost permanently injured due to appalling technique. I qualified as a throws coach in 1972, went through the revised system again between 1978 to senior coach in 1984. I have coached in the U.K. Athletics L4 Senior Event Coach, L3 Education Coach, plus a number of different Club Coach II's. Attendance at the Loughborough International management course 1992. North of England coaching since approx. 1972, then nation-wide from 1984 & with International athletes since 1986. Voted Sports Council 'Coach of the Year' for Yorkshire and Humberside in 1996. Sport Council 'Special Award' presented for services to Coach Education 1996. I have coached on all five continents. Was one of the first strength & conditioning coaches employed by The English Institute of Sport. I have met many top physiology and kinesiology research Professors such as Prof Tidow and Schmidtbleicher, Prof Istvan Bayli & Dr Chui. For six years I followed the research work into hammer throwing with Dr C Morriss and Prof R Bartlett at Crewe & Alsager, Manchester University. Two books have been published containing input from myself. With others the GCSE support module was produced. regularlary contributed to 'The Coach' magazine until it's demise. Currently working on putting information on hammer throwing and associated subjects onto the UK hammer-circle website under the hammer research area.
Sadly Mike passed away on April 5th 2014 and will be missed by many in the sport who appreciated his meticulous attention to detail and love of hammer throwing.
