31st August 1997 marked the last truely competitive race for Steve and probably the pinnacle of his athletics career! Joy ended in despair, after been picked to represent Great Britain at the Liverpool International Half marathon, he was hit by a car in the race and ended up with a fractured cartilage and unable to resume training.
Previously, Steve had captured the AAA’s 10 mile title and a bronze in the AAA’s half marathon and represented Wales on numerous occasions on all surfaces. Probably best described as an all rounder and someone who gave a 101% in every race (and training!) and is Cardiff AAC through and through!
Didn’t really come to any great providence until after a trip to Bahrain with Ian Wilson’s SAAD team and with the help of Mark Bryant and PUMA (at a later date) he was able to move up a couple of steps on the athletics ladder and produced some decent performances in his early 30’s.
Now he is enjoying passing on his knowledge and understanding of athletics to a group of youngsters (and anyone wanting support or help)
